After a 2-1 victory over Lemoore United Saturday to advance to the Under-14 Association Cup finals, the Eel River Rapids soccer team came up short against the Sacramento Gladiators, losing 3-2 in the final Sunday.

Junior Reynoza and Pedro Cortez each scored goals for the Rapids against Lemoore, while Reynoza had both goals in the game against Sacramento.

Rapids head coach Andres Reynoza said he was very proud of how his kids performed, especially considering the circumstances of the finals, as the Rapids had to go with a 10-player roster for a game that included two overtime sessions.

“To play with 10 players for is not easy,” Reynoza said. “I think it would have been different if I had been able to take all of the players. It’s rough when we can’t make substitutions.”

For the season, the Rapids finished 25-4-1.

Reynoza said this won’t be the last local soccer fans will hear of his team.

“They’re all going into high school,” Reynoza said. “But I think we’re going to have a U-16 Eel River Rapids team next year. We’re going to be pretty good I think.”
