George “Buck” Buchanan was born in Alturas, Calif., Nov, 6, 1923, and passed away Sunday, Feb. 10, in Beaverton, Ore., at the age of 84.
George served in the U.S. Navy as a medic during World War II and spent time in Australia recovering from injuries before returning home.
George was a student in the Actors Lab in Los Angeles. He pursued a movie career and appeared in several films and on New York stage and television.
The majority of his career was spent as a radio personality. After attending The Don Martin Radio and Television School, he worked for radio stations in San Jose (KDON), then on to Watsonville, Salinas and Monterey for the same station. Later, his work took him to Palm Springs, San Mateo and then home to Eureka. He worked for KIEM Channel 3 and KRED radio.
George is survived by his wife Patricia (Texas); daughter Valarie and her husband Doug; stepsons Theodore, Jeffery and Jeff and Jeff’s wife Barbara; grandchildren Jackie, David, Cynde, Rochelle, Travis and Adam; sister Mary Matthews; nieces Carole and Diane; and nephew Dan, as well as several cousins.
His mother, father and brother Albert preceded him in death.
Buck will always be remembered for his sense of humor and antics on local TV as the weatherman. To his family, he will be the same. We will all cherish those times of rib-breaking laughter. Buck’s famous sign-off: “You cannot give kindness away. It always comes back to you.”
I remember Buck Buchanan from KDAN radio in the early 60s. I worked at KRED Radio during that time. I don't remember him from KIEM-TV or KRED Radio. is this the same person?

George's father was my great uncle, and I met George once while visiting family in Eureka. We had hoped to stay in contact, but lost touch after our brief visit in Eureka. I would like to get in touch with his family and hopefully share stories and news of the Buchanan family. I can be reached via email at railfans@bak.rr.com. Denise (Buchanan) Pennell
