Isabel Cortes of Fortuna Union High School has been selected from 26,000 high schools nationwide to receive a cash scholarship from the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation.

The senior will be among a total of 250 finalists who will travel to Atlanta on April 24 to attend the Coca-Cola Scholars Weekend, where she will go through a final interview process that will determine whether she is either a national or regional scholar.

The 50 national scholars will each receive a $20,000 scholarship award, while the 200 regional scholars will receive a $10,000 scholarship.

Cortes has been involved in ASB office, California Scholarship Federation and National Honor Society, FFA and the Fortuna Creeks Project.

She also was selected as one of Humboldt County’s “Rising Stars” participants. After graduation, she plans to major in political science, eventually study law and run for public office.
