Just trying to peg Joanne Rand’s music is impossible, according to a news release. Radical, classical, earth-based, politico-spiritual, folk-rock “song poetry” of the ages, it is written for the masses, but really appealing to the individual, the release stated. Rand’s 20-plus year career includes performances with Bonnie Raitt, John Hartford, Janis Ian, members of the Grateful Dead, John Trudell, Floyd Westerman, Ralph Nader and the McGarrigle sisters.
Rand will perform on Tuesday at 9 p.m. at the Red Fox Tavern, 415 Fifth St., Eureka. Admission is $5, or $3 with a ticket from the Jackie Greene show earlier that evening.
“Once upon a time, a pigtailed kid with a big stick stood on a Georgia mountaintop, singing the birds right out of the trees,” the release stated. “At 16 she began a big zigzag all over this country and beyond: Florida, London, Chicago, Santa Fe, Alaska, the Amazon. Then she hit the Pacific Northwest and a certain wild river captured her heart.”
To this river is dedicated Rand’s seventh self-produced album. According to the release, “Into the River” is all about claiming your life, diving from the head into the heart. In an age of uncertainty, the release continued, Rand evokes the human values of love, compassion and courage.
With roots in classical piano, gospel and the politico-folk-rock music of her youth, as well as indigenous songs and chants, Rand has been performing nationally and recording since the late 1980s.
During the 1990s, Rand’s quartet was voted Best Acoustic Band in Sonoma County by a California reader’s poll. In 2002 she was proclaimed Sebastopol’s official folk singer by the city’s mayor.
Rand has since returned to Humboldt County, and recently released “Where Our Power Lies,” a new album that contains 14 songs, featuring Steve Kimock, members of Copper Wimmin, two full bands and more.
