Only one of a pair of tall ships will make it to Humboldt County this year.

The tall ship Hawaiian Chieftain, scheduled to arrive in Eureka on Thursday has been delayed due to a mechanical problem discovered late last week during her visit to Sausalito.

Repairs require a haul-out of the vessel at a marine maintenance facility. At press time, the Historical Seaport, which owns the ships, does not have an estimated day or time of arrival for Hawaiian Chieftain in Eureka.

The organization said The Lady Washington remains on schedule for arrival noon Thursday at Adorni Center, 1101 Waterfront Drive, in Eureka.

Lady Washington appeared as the HMS Interceptor in the 2003 motion picture. Both ships will offer public tours and sailings during their six-day visit.

When the ships reach their berths, the Trumpet Consort von Humboldt will greet the vessels with a composition titled “The Lady Washington Fanfare,” which is comprised of tones based on notes of the alphabet aligned with the words “Lady Washington.”

The group specializes in playing trumpets without valves based on 17th century designs. For more information on Trumpet Consort von Humboldt, contact Gilbert Cline, 707-826-5441 or e-mail gdc1@humboldt.edu.

During the Eureka stopover, the Lady Washington will be open for walk-on visits. A $3 donation per person will be appreciated, according to a news release.

The ship has also scheduled public sailings.

A family oriented Adventure Sail, with sea shanty singing and a chance to raise a sail, is scheduled for April 20, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tickets for the Adventure Sail are $55 per person for adults, $45 per person for seniors, students and active military, and $35 per person for children under 12.

For more information on sailing times and to purchase tickets, phone hone 800-200-5239 or visit www.historicalseaport.org.

The ships are scheduled to depart Eureka on April 22 for Crescent City, arriving approximately there at 2 p.m. on April 23.

Details about Lady Washington are available at www.historicalseaport.org.

The ships are owned by Grays Harbor Historical Seaport Authority, which is a not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) public development authority based in Aberdeen, Wash. The authority’s mission is to provide educational, vocational, recreational and ambassadorial activities and experiences that promote and preserve the maritime history of Grays Harbor, the Pacific Northwest and the nation while serving the needs of its community.
