On Saturday, the Eureka Downtown post office and Arcata post office will be open to assist customers with applying for and renewing their passports. The Eureka post office at Fifth and H streets will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the Arcata post office will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
In addition to the familiar passport book, travelers now have the option of applying for a passport card, which may be used for land and sea travel between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or the Caribbean.
First-time applicants need to bring with them proof of U.S. citizenship (such as a copy of their birth certificate) and a valid form of photo ID. Those renewing their passports need only bring in their old passport.
Passport applications also require two recent identical photographs, which can be taken at the post office for a $15 fee.
There is a fee of $100 for first-time applicants for a passport book (photo not included), $75 for a passport renewal and $45 for an adult passport card.
Go to the United States Postal Service Web site at www.usps.com/passport for more information and to download a passport application form.
