Fortuna’s Hillary Will has had some impressive results through the first six races of the National Hot Rod Association’s Top Fuel Dragster division this year and will look to continue building on her early success this weekend in Madison, Ill., at the O’Reilly NHRA Midwest Nationals.
In February, Will established two track drag racing records at the Phoenix International Raceway in Arizona and the Auto Club Raceway in Pomona with speeds of 334.32 mph and 334.56 mph, respectively, and the latter speed set a record for the fastest time ever recorded by a woman in motor sports history.
And, Will’s notable placements this year include advancing to the semifinals in the Top Fuel division of the AC Delco NHRA Gatornationals in Gainesville, Fla., on March 16, before falling by only six-thousandths of a second to Brandon Bernstein, and being edged by just 15-thousandths of a second by four-time defending NHRA Top Fuel Champion Tony Schumacher in the quarterfinals of the Southern Nationals in Atlanta on Sunday.
Will said she thinks that her recent performance against Schumacher is just one indication of how far she’s come this season and believes everything is starting to come together for her.
“This is the best season start we’ve had,” Will said. “The car’s running better and I’m driving better, and I hope our competition knows we’re right on the verge of something great.”
Will added that her assistant crew chief called a meeting immediately following the Southern Nationals to praise her effort and this has her upbeat for the Midwest Nationals.
“We’re looking forward to the rest of the season,” Will said. “There’s a lot of racing left.”
This weekend, Will is looking to qualify in the top eight like she has for all but one of her races thus far, as she believes her qualifying position has been imperative to her early success and could help her pick up her first win of the season.
