Council to consider emergency moratorium

Regulation of medical marijuana dispensaries will be back before the Arcata City Council Wednesday.

The controversial issue of how to regulate marijuana grow-houses and dispensaries has been an ongoing topic of discussion for the council.

The council recently held a study session to discuss zoning standards for placement of the facilities, also taking into account design criteria, size limits, safety and whether dispensaries should be permitted to grow and distribute medical marijuana at the same location.

The council will consider adopting an interim ordinance Wednesday that would place a temporary moratorium on establishing medical marijuana dispensaries and growing and processing operations.

The council will also consider a proposed expenditure plan for a one-half percent transportation maintenance, rehabilitation and improvements sales tax, as well as consider directing city staff to begin working with the tax task force.

The council approved development of a sales tax measure to be placed on the Nov. 4 ballot at its April 16 meeting.

Also before the council Wednesday will be a public hearing on unmet transit needs, a public hearing on the Draft Land Use Code, and an award of a bid for the O Street Reconstruction Project to install concrete and asphalt improvements between 10th and 11th streets.

The Arcata City Council will meet at 6 p.m. at City Hall.
