Monkey see, monkey do

It has long been a staple notion among radical feminists that the preference of small boys for toy autos and trucks and of small girls for dolls is nothing more than social and cultural conditioning.

Recently the scientists at Atlanta’s Yerkes Primate Research Center decided to put this theory to the test. They spread out an array of wheeled toys — autos and trucks — and rag dolls. Then they brought in several young rhesus monkeys. Researcher Kim Wallen noted that “they are not subject to advertising. They are not subject to parental encouragement, they are not subject to peer chastisement.” In other words, they were free of any cultural or social influences.

The research team then let the monkeys loose to see if they had any preferences. They had them, all right. The young females played with the dolls, but also with some of the wheeled toys. The “boy” monkeys, however, did no such thing. They stuck to playing with trucks and cars — exclusively.

The researchers’ conclusion was that the preferences appeared to be “innate.”

I have been watching small children play for many years up close. While boys are usually more rambunctious than girls, most also enjoy playing with dolls and little girls like playing with wheeled toys. My own daughters, when allowed to choose their own toys, picked dolls and "girly toys" sometimes and toys traditionally associated with boys like Lincoln logs, fire trucks, etc. other times. I recently took a 6 year old girl shopping and she chose a remote controlled race car. "Girl toys" and "boy toys" are like "female occupations" and "male occupations," NONSENSE!

"The “boy” monkeys, however, did no such thing. "

Why is "boy" in quotes?

Are they NOT males? and therefore boys?

Ooops- I keep forgetting. This IS the Reporter, and we must never upset our fundementalist readership.
I forget how it is un-American and blasphemy to speak as if monkeys and apes could actually be related to, and similar to, us.
Only those nasty old scientists believe that, right?

Pesky old science, anyway.........

If anything this shows that boys don't want to be moms, but girls can do it all :)
