Allen J. Smith “Smitty,” of Hydesville, died April 30 of natural causes at age 88. A private service is planned.

He was born in Poison, Mont., to Arthur Albert Smith and Mary Elizabeth Smith on March 27, 1920. He served in the United States Army. He married Vivian Hobbs on Sept. 26, 1960; she died Dec. 24, 2001. He worked in Humboldt County as a log truck driver until his retirement

Survivors include a daughter, Susan Fowler, of Fortuna, and stepchildren Cindy Hill, of Bend, Ore., Sonja Perkins, of Creswell, Ore., and Leonard Chamberlain, of Creswell, Ore. Stepson Donald Hobbs preceded him in death. He has three grandchildren, Scotty, Nathan and Brandon Fowler, of Fortuna.

His family and his beloved dog, Smokey, will miss him.
