What better way to show your mother that you care than by taking her out to the track.
The Redwood Acres Raceway will hold its annual Mother’s Day Race today – the second event of the racing season, which will also feature the Best Appearing Car Contest in addition to the regular events.
The race season official began two weeks ago with the Hank Hilton Memorial race, and several new faces jumped out to an early lead in the points standings.
Among them was Marty Walsh, driver of the No. 17 car in the Sportsman class, who is currently seven points ahead of last year’s champion, Brandon Barnwell, and will look to extend the lead in tonight’s event.
In the Mini Stock division, Brian McIntosh sits atop the overall standings with 69 points, just five above second-place Denzie Barrett, who kept things close during the entire race the last time they met.
After waking up Friday morning to check on his car, McIntosh discovered that he had no oil pressure and decided to replace his pump, and after doing so, feels that he and the rig will be ready to take home another trophy.
“Mainly I just want to work my way up through the pack,” McIntosh said. “I have to start in the back since I won the last race, but I have to be patient. I can’t lie to you though, I still want the championship by the end of the season, and I’m going to race with that in mind.”
Elsewhere, Paul Peeples Jr. is already in mid-season form.
The returning Thunder Roadster champ is in the lead again, and is nine points ahead of the No. 66 car, Thomas Payne.
Meanwhile, in the Real Stocks, Jim Redd is seven points above Ryan Peeples, a promising young driver who will look to jump past Redd in the points standings tonight.
And last, but certainly not least, Romeo Venza currently leads the Limited Street Division, but the class is in need of more cars in order for Redwood Acres to hold a race.
Whether or not Limited Street will run tonight will be decided later today once the total number of drivers is known.
