Third District Supervisorial candidate Mark Lovelace announced Tuesday he has received the endorsement of the Sierra Club, according to a news release.

Local Sierra Club Chairperson Gregg Gold said that the group chose to endorse Lovelace because of his extensive experience on environmental issues, the release stated.

“Mark has a demonstrated record of achievement, and the knowledge and desire necessary to create sustainable jobs and communities,” Gold said in the release.

“He saved the Sunny Brae Community Forest, providing jobs in logging, and recreation opportunities for hikers and mountain bikers, while preserving our valuable ecosystem. The Sierra Club feels that Mark, more than any other candidate, has the qualities necessary to take Humboldt County into the future,” Gold stated.

Lovelace thanked the Sierra Club for their endorsement and pledged to continue his commitment to environmental stewardship as a member of the Board of Supervisors.

“Protecting our environment is so important for all of the people and industries that call Humboldt County home,” Lovelace said in the release.

“The Sierra Club has been a powerful voice in that effort, and I’m proud to have their endorsement.”

In recognition of his environmental work, Lovelace has also been presented with the Redwood Region Audubon Society’s Conservation Award for 2005 and was named “Citizen of the Year” by the Arcata Eye in 2003 for his work to save the Sunny Brae Community Forest.
