Junior outfielder Chrissy Motzny hit her second home run in as many days and senior Lizzy Prescott pitched her second consecutive shutout as the Lady Jacks capped a remarkable comeback at the NCAA Division-II West Region Softball Championships with a 9-0 win over Western Oregon in the title game at Arcata on Sunday.
Motzny, who had not hit a home run all season until the playoffs, blasted a three-run shot over the center field fence to key a five-run first inning for Humboldt State, and that was more than enough run support for All-American Prescott, who was named the tournament’s most outstanding player.
“I’m ecstatic,” said a jubilant Motzny afterwards. “It’s still all hitting me, but it feels great.”
The win was the sixth straight for the Jacks at the double-elimination tournament and sends them on to the NCAA national championships, which get under way in Houston today.
Prescott turned in another stellar performance in the pitcher’s circle, allowing just four hits while striking out six and shutting down the Wolves for the second straight game after they had previously outscored their first three opponents at the tournament by a score of 20-1.
“Lizzy pitched her heart out,” said HSU junior first baseman Natalie Galletly, who had a pair of hits in the win. “She did just what she had to do.”
Prescott pitched an incredible 46 innings at the tournament, while striking out 54 and winning six games. All three were West Region playoff records for a single season.
The Jacks led off the bottom of the first with three back-to-back-to-back base hits from Nikki Ketteringham, Caitlin Klug and Galletly to load the bases.
A pair of sacrifice fly balls then scored two runs, before Motzny’s homer gave the Jacks a 5-0 early cushion.
HSU added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth to end the game early on the mercy rule.
