Closure of Arctic Circle restaurant a tragedy

Dear Editor,

I was so sorry to read about the closing of one of my favorite little restaurants, the Arctic Circle. This was always a clean restaurant, the food was always good and the staff were always cheery and obliging. The sad part is that this was a family-operated restaurant and the parents planned to pass it on to the next generation in the future. This is a tragedy.

I can see government buildings putting in ramps, etc., for the handicapped, but not every business. This is supposed to be a free country. I don’t see why handicapped people can’t choose other restaurants that please their situations because there are so many that cater to them.

Soon we may be required to put ramps into our houses. I think we need to change the laws before Lawyer Singleton comes knocking at my door.

One must remember, a public business is open to ALL of the public, not to a limited few.

That being stated, Ms. Evans is correct, if a disabled person does not care for the access provided or not, move on to another business. Most disabled do, but there are a few that need more attention and listen to lawyers.

I am a strong advocate for providing reasonable accommodations and achievable access into ALL public businesses. But it is also important to realize that equal public access is not possible for every business or part of it.

If a business believes access is not needed into their establishment, they are saying my dollar and the dollars of those with me is not of value to them. I take my business elsewhere, trying to remain locally, but if not, the Internet works just as well.

We also need to realize that some small businesses will go the extra step in assisting the disabled if appropriate access is not there. These are businesses that I shop at, may not have a ramp or other access needed, but they show they care by assisting at the entrance (Few offer this and they lose business due to lack of customer service.).

So, the next time you see an individual looking into your business, take the time to speak to them. They may not be able to get in, but they may buy something if you paid a little extra attention to your customers both in and out of your business. Also, if you speak to those outside your business, you might discover new customers through word of mouth.
