Humboldt County native Mario Matteoli, of Weary Boys fame, is coming to Arcata to perform at Jambalaya, 915 H St., on Friday, May 23. The show will start at 9 p.m. (tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door) and promotes his new release, “Golden State.”
“Golden State,” his second solo release since parting with the Weary Boys in January 2006, is a ’60s pop array of starry rock songs and heart-achy ballads of love lost and found, a news release stated. Electric slide, 12-string guitar, tambourine and mellotron give this album its golden, dreamy feel that nods to early Tom Petty and John Lennon circa “Mind Games,” according to the release.
Mario Matteoli, 26, was born and raised in Eureka. He started playing guitar at 14, listening to the likes of Hank Williams, Bob Dylan and Clarence White. After playing in various bluegrass and rock-and-roll bands and a brief stint at Humboldt State University, Matteoli packed his bags with buddies Brian Salvi and Darren Hoff and moved to Austin, Texas, to form the touring act The Weary Boys. The Weary Boys produced six albums, with the majority of the songs written by Matteoli, the release stated.
Matteoli self-released his first solo album, “Hard Luck Hittin’” in June 2006. Matteoli graced the BMI stage at the most recent Austin City Limits Festival and has opened for ZZ Top, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Leon Russell and Southern Culture on the Skids.
