After playing two seasons at Shasta College, Eureka High graduate Katelyn Guild has committed to Menlo College to play basketball for the Oaks.

“We’re going to miss her next year,” said Shasta head coach Jerry Brown. “She’s been an absolute asset to the team, but even more important is her academic accomplishments.”

Guild carries a 4.0 GPA, and while Menlo does not give athletic scholarships, her academic achievement allowed her to earn the Menlo grant as well as the president’s scholarship.

“I never thought that I’d be able to play basketball at this level,” Guild said. “I’m really happy that I can continue to play and still be relatively close to my family.”

Guild also had offers to play at schools in Montana and North Dakota, but opted for Menlo in order to be closer to home.

After college, Guild plans to pursue a teaching credential in special education, working with severely disabled children, but is currently working on her Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Studies.

McKinleyville graduate, Thomas Richards, recently finished the golf season at Santa Barbara City College, rounding out a successful freshman year.

On April 28, Richards shot 70-70 to finish four-under par in the 36-hole championship tournament for the Western State Conference.

Richards placed second out of 48 golfers in the tournament and closed out the season with an average score of 76.56.

“I’m happy with how I finished,” Richards said. “Next year, I plan on returning to the team and continue improving my game.”

After Santa Barbara City College, Richards plans to pursue a Business degree either at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo or Chico State.

Flynn’s pitching performances this year earned him an honorable mention from the All-Northern Athletics Conference.

Infielder Lee Hawkins transferred to the University of Wisconsin, Platteville, after a successful career at the College of the Redwoods, and continued to excel for his new school this year.

Hawkins batted .321 for the Pioneers and finished the season with 22 RBIs.

“I started the whole year bouncing between second base and third,” Hawkins said.

This summer, Hawkins plans to return to Humboldt County and play for the Steelheads along with his brother Jesse.

Academically, Lee is currently pursuing a degree in Accounting.

Sullivan holding his own at Bethany

McKinleyville graduate Hop Sullivan played for Bethany College this year and recently had three hits in the KCAC Baseball Tournament.
