California voters approved Proposition 99 on Tuesday’s ballot by 65.3 percent to 34.7 percent by midnight.

In Humboldt County, with 100 percent of precincts reporting in, 61.87 percent voted to approve it.

The proposition will prevent state and local governments from using eminent domain specifically to acquire an owner-occupied residence for non-public use.

“Despite the fact that landlords spent nearly $8 million to fool voters about Prop. 98, the voters once again showed that they see these deceptive schemes for what they are, and hopefully this sends a strong signal to others that voters have little tolerance for dishonest tactics,” said Kathy Fairbanks, spokesperson for Yes on Proposition 99 and No on Proposition 98.

Proposition 99 dueled with Proposition 98, which would also have prevented state and local governments from using eminent domain to take private property for distribution to private enterprises. But, if it passed, it would also have repealed rent control.

Californians were voting against Proposition 98 55.2 percent to 44.8 percent at midnight. In Humboldt County with 100 percent of the precincts reporting in, 58.83 percent were voting against while 41.17 percent were supporting the proposition.
