McKinleyville voters supported Measure C on Tuesday’s ballot by 56.97 percent, which will allow McKinleyville Union School District to sell $14 million in bond funds for school repairs and replacements in the district.

The schools that will benefit from Measure C’s passing are Dow’s Prairie Elementary School, Morris Elementary School and McKinleyville Middle School.

Measure C supporters were pleased to have assured funds, since state budget cuts have left schools questioning how to afford repairs.

“It (will) benefit the school district with being able to plan our facilities for the next 20 years or so,” said Maureen Hester, MUSD business director. “We do look forward to the opportunity to have an oversight committee with members of the community to set priorities for what the community would like to see in the district.”

Although the Humboldt County Taxpayers League said it felt Measure C was for a good cause, it was against it because members felt it needed more planning and public input.

“We didn’t get to fully analyze what the implications are,” said Clifford Chapman, executive director of the Humboldt County Taxpayers League. “It looks like they’re spending money on deferred maintenance rather than improvements, which was one of our biggest concerns.

“There definitely will be an oversight committee and it needs to be monitored carefully on how the money is expended.”
