Monday evening, a collision between a motorcyclist and a GMC pickup hauling a horse trailer resulted in the death of the motorcyclist.
At approximately 6:57 p.m., Jessica M. Smith, 34, of Garberville, was driving a 2005 GMC pickup eastbound on Briceland Road, approaching the 25 mph curve east of Forest Drive, when Dean E. Schaafsma, 52, of Whitethorn, driving a 1999 Harley-Davidson motorcycle, rounded the curve on the wrong side of the road. The parties were unable to avoid the collision, a California Highway Patrol news release stated, and the left side of the motorcycle struck the left side of the GMC.
The impact ejected Schaafsma from the motorcycle and he came to rest in the westbound traffic lane, the CHP reported. He was taken to Jerold Phelps Community Hospital in Garberville by City Ambulance, where he succumbed to his injuries.
