The Eureka Skate Park got a big boost from the Blue Lake Casino Saturday as residents and skateboard enthusiasts turned out to Blue Lake to support a cause.

The city and skate park backers are trying to close the gap on the remaining $200,000 fundraising goal to build the skate facility slated for the Cooper Gulch Community Park.

The bash featured skate demonstrations by some of the area’s professional skaters.

Vendors sold food and gear during the event that was capped with a benefit dinner and concert featuring Zygoats, Frankenstein L.I.V.S. and Bullet in the casino’s Sapphire Palace.

The skate park project already got a boost from pro skater Tony Hawk’s foundation, which donated $25,000 to the city for the venture in December.

Eureka City Councilman Jeff Leonard has been a staunch supporter of the project and has helped coordinate the fundraising efforts that have been under way since 2007.

A ground-breaking ceremony was held for the skate park in September last year for residents to get a chance to view the designs of the park that are being constructed, in part, with the donated help of Mercer Fraser.

The entire project is estimated to cost approximately $450,000.

Donations for the skate park can be made directly to the Redwood Capital Bank in Eureka, or can be mailed to the Eureka Skate Park Construction Fund, P.O. Box 6305, Eureka, CA 95502.
