Two measures may come before Arcata voters in November.
The Arcata City Council is set to discuss the proposed transactions and use tax measure and Arcata Youth Protection Act tonight at 6 p.m. in the Council Chamber at the Arcata City Hall.
The Arcata Youth Protection Act is an initiative that would prohibit military recruitment of youth under 18 in the city of Arcata.
The city clerk certified a petition in June which qualifies placement of the ordinance on the November ballot.
The council will consider adopting the ordinance or submitting the ordinance to voters, and will consider ordering a report from any city department regarding the impact of the ordinance on the city.
The transactions and use tax measure would increase the city’s sales tax by a half-cent, with a half percent dedicated toward transportation enhancement, rehabilitation and improvements and a quarter percent designated for public safety.
At the June 18 city council meeting, the council directed the city attorney to draft a measure for placement on the November ballot.
Today, the council will consider adopting a resolution that would place the measure on the Nov. 4 ballot and provide for the preparation of an impartial analysis, and will introduce an ordinance imposing a transaction and use tax to be administered by the State Board of Equalization.
Other items before the council include a continued public hearing to consider potential projects to submit for a HOME Program Grant Application for up to $6 million and a presentation by Humboldt Waste Management Authority on food waste diversion and utilization.
