Ferndale Rep Radio Theatre to present two shows

Ferndale Repertory Radio Theatre will present two half-hour live radio shows Thursday starting promptly at 7:30 p.m. Presented before a live audience and broadcast live on KHUM Radio, 104.3 and 104.7 FM, will be an episode of “Night Beat: The Elevator Caper.” The story features “Lucky” Stone, newspaper reporter, out in the middle of the night on the streets of Chicago in search of a story, which usually means a run-in with crime. Not only does he get his story, but he manages to solve the crime and see the criminals off to the “big house.”

KMUD’s Battle of the Rock Bands

KMUD radio is currently accepting submissions for its 2008 Battle of the Rock Bands. The station encourages all punk, thrash, metal, alternative and classic rock bands to participate in this competition. The top six bands out of the total of submissions received will be invited to perform, compete and showcase their music live on stage at the Mateel Community Center in Redway.

Saint John and the Sinners: ‘hardest-working band in Humboldt’

Saint John Hunt’s band, “Saint John and the Sinners,” plays classic rock almost every night at various local casinos and bars. In a year’s time, the band has played more than 77 shows. Its members said they believe this classifies them as the hardest-working band in Humboldt County.

Mario Matteoli comes back to Humboldt County to promote new album

Humboldt County native Mario Matteoli, of Weary Boys fame, is coming to Arcata to perform at Jambalaya, 915 H St., on Friday, May 23. The show will start at 9 p.m. (tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door) and promotes his new release, “Golden State.”

Youths showcase their films

Barbara A. Domanchuk said she has been interested in working with young people since college. About eight years ago, she wrote a grant explaining her vision of bringing filmmaking into local schools and giving youths the chance to learn technology in a fun way while expressing themselves.

Visitors Bureau announces Best of Humboldt Video Contest

The Humboldt County Convention & Visitors Bureau invites all video artists — professionals, students and home-based talents alike — to participate in the first Best of Humboldt Video Contest. “We need great video content for our Web site,” explained Executive Director Tony Smithers. “We need videos that document and celebrate the many wonderful reasons to visit Humboldt County, from mystical hikes in the redwoods to waterborne adventures, and from lively community events to fascinating attractions.”

Tracy Dittes’ photos on display at the Hart Gallery

Photographer Tracy Dittes will be the featured artist in the Hart Gallery during June and July. Dittes is a Ferndale resident and her show features photographs taken in and around Ferndale. Photographs range from pastoral landscapes to close-up moments with her neighborhood cows and evening photos of the back alleys of Ferndale. Dittes said she is fascinated with capturing light on the land and is interested in sharing the beauty and peace she finds representative of Humboldt County life.

Art in McKinleyville

Maureen Rose started Community Art Workshop in McKinleyville because she said she saw a need for an art retail store and artists space in that town. Since opening at the start of the year, the Community Art Workshop has offered classes in everything from stained glass to guitar.
