Humboldt Bay Rowing Association junior team rower Jean Sack has been invited to attend a United States Junior National Team development camp in Seattle this summer.
Sack, 15, a student at College of the Redwoods, is in her third year of competition for the local youth rowing team.
She and three other team members attended a “talent identification” camp in the Bay Area this past February, where National Team coaches were able to identify athletes with potential to compete for the United States at the Junior World Championships, which in 2007 will be held in Beijing, China as a precursor for the Olympic Games in 2008.
With a combination of coaches’ recommendations, a good performance at the identification camp, personal time trial scores, and team performance results, Sack was chosen from a large pool of athletes across the country to attend the summer camp in Seattle. The camp will focus mostly on skill and racing development for younger athletes.
Sack and teammates will wrap up their spring racing season at Lake Natoma in Sacramento at the Southwest Junior Rowing Championships May 19-20th.
Last year, Sack and teammate Kelby Ross garnered a 6th place finish in the finals of the Junior Women’s Double Sculls event, the highest the team finish at a championship event. HBRA will be racing in several boat categories in both boy’s and girl’s events.
