The Center for Indian Community Development and the Native Cultures Fund will present a free screening of KEET-TV’s “The Original Patriots: Northern California Indian Veterans of World War II” today at 4 p.m. at Humboldt State University’s Behavioral and Social Sciences Building Forum, Room 162.
The one-hour documentary was developed from Eureka-based author and Humboldt Area Foundation-based Native Cultures Fund Program Officer Chag Lowry’s book by the same title that was published earlier this year.
As previously reported in The Eureka Reporter, Lowry (Pit River/Maidu/Yurok) and KEET producer Sam Greene partnered for the documentary’s production.
The program features interviews with World War II veterans Wally Scott, a Yurok Tribe member; Lee Hover, a Karuk Tribe member; and Frank Richards, a Tolowa Tribe member. The show also includes World War II footage interspersed throughout the film.
The three veterans will be guests of honor at the screening, a news release stated. Following the film, Lowry will lead a discussion about American Indian veterans’ experiences, and he will sign copies of his book.
In additional American Indian news, the HSU Library is currently showcasing the World War II experience as felt in Humboldt County. Lowry’s book is part of that display.
The exhibit will be on display through Tuesday.
