Legalized amphetamines would show negative effects

Published: May 10 2008, 11:44 PM

Dear Editor, The best way to win the “war” against amphetamines is to make them legally available. Let everyone see what happens to the users, in broad daylight. Put all the black market dealers out of business. This is by far the best, and only, solution to our problems.

Handling of Reggae on the River loses vote for Fennell

Published: May 10 2008, 11:43 PM

Dear Editor, I wish I didn’t have to be the muckraker, but I can’t vote for former KMUD news director, Estelle Fennell. She showed such terrible judgment about the Mateel Community Center/People Productions controversy that I have no trust in her ability to separate truth from personal loyalties. He was surprised and amazed that the other jurors were not of the same opinion and wanted to deliberate.

Mental health care needs to be more than just drugging

Published: May 9 2008, 11:08 PM

Dear Editor, The Board of Supervisors proclaimed May as Mental Health Month again this year. Clients of the mental health system can look back at the cessation of frontal lobotomies, insulin shock therapy and the almost extinct electro-convulsive therapy, yet the care of those in the programs that are to serve them, can be quite similar today. It is still “maintenance therapy.”

Special Interests or the Working Class?

Published: May 9 2008, 11:07 PM

Dear Editor, As a new year of local elections approaches, I see the well-funded special interests have already begun their campaign ads and rhetoric. Despite politicians’ promises and misdirection, they can do very little when it comes to economics.
