Pear tree showers its blessings

Our precious little semi-dwarf pear tree is once again showering us with its blessings. In fact, it actually blessed Roy on the top of his head the other day. We have the first pear pie of the season (or half of it, anyway) in the refrigerator, a load of the fruit washed and ready to be worked with on the kitchen counter, and a bag full for the next load out on the deck.

Each year, my daughter, a counselor at College of the Sequoias in Visalia, sends me the latest release of The Beloit College Mindset List. Created by Beloit’s humanities professor Tom McBride and Public Affairs Director Ron Nief, the list documents how the year’s entering freshmen differ in experience from those who have gone before them. Invariably, it contains items that boggle my mind.

Slow food extravaganza

Labor Day weekend in San Francisco will be a food lover’s dream. From tasting pavilions at Fort Mason, to a victory garden at the Civic Center, to a series of world-class food authorities speaking at the Herbst Theater, to gourmet dinners at selected restaurants, Slow Food Nation will blanket the city with experiences, events and education aimed at waking up the public to the relationship between “the planet and the palate” as evidenced in American food.

Children learn by example
