Clean up and invasive plant removal

Sept. 27 A clean up and invasive plant removal will be held Saturday, Sept. 27 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Janes Creek in the Arcata Bottoms. The event is sponsored by the AmeriCorps Watershed Stewards Project, California Department of Fish and Game, Humboldt Fish Action Council, and City of Arcata. Volunteers will meet at 9 a.m. at Westwood Manor Park, off Heather Lane and Foster Avenue in Arcata. A continental breakfast and barbecue lunch will be provided for volunteers. Participants should bring water, gloves, rubber boots, and wear work clothing.

Sept. 13 & 14 On September 13-14, Friends of the Arcata Marsh (FOAM) will hold a training session for those interested in volunteering at the Arcata Marsh & Wildlife Sanctuary. Attendees will learn about birds, plants, wetlands, invertebrates, marsh history, the wastewater treatment process, and how to lead tours. Docent manuals will be distributed. Participants will meet at the Interpretive Center on South G Street from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 13, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 14 to learn how to lead tours for all ages or staff the Interpretive Center. 'Insects of the Mattole'

Sanctuary Forest invites the public to join an in-stream “Insects of the Mattole” walk in the Mattole River on Aug. 23 at 10 a.m. This one-mile, four-hour hike has a moderate exertion rating and moves over uneven and often slippery river bottom terrain. River shoes and a walking stick are recommended, and hikers must be prepared to get wet up to their waist. The hike is free of charge. Register by phoning the Hike Line at 707-986-1087, ext. 5.
